The VA Pittsburgh Health System (VAPHS) Employee Engagement Center (EEC) is being recognized for have embarking on a transformative journey to enhance employee engagement and improve services to Veterans. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, they seized the opportunity to reassess and strengthen VAPHS' organizational culture and operational frameworks. Their approach focuses on fostering collaboration, well-being, and innovation among employees, anchored in the principles of Human Centered Design (HCD).

Key efforts include:

  1. Strategic Goals: Katie and her team developed strategic goals in 2022 aimed at enhancing employee engagement at VAPHS. These goals were designed to empower supervisors, build a culture aligned with the VA mission, and promote collaboration across departments, in line with the President’s Management Agenda Priority 1.

  2. Employee Engagement Initiatives: The EEC conducted employee focus groups and HCD co-creation sessions to understand employee needs and co-create solutions. This inclusive approach led to the identification of key themes and actionable solutions to improve the employee experience.

  3. Workforce Matters (WFM) Pilot Program: Launched to bridge communication gaps and improve collaboration between middle management and executive leadership, the WFM pilot program initially focuses on the Health Administration Services (HAS) Patient Registration department. This initiative aims to empower frontline staff to enhance services directly impacting Veterans.

 

Benefits to the Public:

  • Increased Employee Engagement: Efforts led by Katie and the EEC have significantly boosted employee engagement, as evidenced by a 22% increase in survey response rates compared to previous years. This heightened engagement translates into improved services and care for Veterans at VAPHS.

  • Enhanced Veteran Experience: Through initiatives like the WFM pilot program and employee-led innovations, employees are empowered to address issues directly impacting Veteran care, such as improving communication and service quality.

  • Innovative Solutions: The EEC’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation has led to the introduction of programs like Spark-Seed-Spread and Greenhouse Initiative, facilitating employee-driven improvements in operational efficiency and service delivery.

  • Mission Alignment: Initiatives such as Tour of Duty Training and Employee Appreciation Day reinforce a strong connection to the VA mission among staff, fostering a culture of dedication and service excellence at VAPHS.
     

Overall, Katie Braun and the EEC's initiatives are pivotal in creating a workplace environment where every employee feels valued, empowered, and committed to delivering exceptional care to our nation’s Veterans. Their comprehensive approach to employee engagement and innovation serves as a model for enhancing organizational effectiveness and improving public service delivery within VAPHS and beyond.
