Lori Murphy is being recognized for significantly enhancing services for Veterans through the creation and expansion of the Compassionate Contact Corps (CCC), a virtual program designed to combat loneliness among Veterans. Recognizing the heightened risk of social isolation and its associated health issues, Murphy and her team transitioned from in-home visits to a phone and video-based system amid the pandemic. This initiative involved training volunteers, many of whom were Veterans themselves, to provide regular, meaningful interactions with isolated Veterans.

The CCC has proven effective in addressing the problem of loneliness. By June 2020, the program had been successfully piloted at several sites, receiving positive feedback from Veterans, volunteers, and clinicians. The program's success is exemplified by a case where a socially disengaged Veteran experienced a significant boost in confidence and social activity following regular interactions with a volunteer. As the program gained recognition, Murphy expanded its reach, and in 2021, CCC was recognized as a promising practice at the VHA Shark Tank Competition.

The benefits of the CCC are evident in its impact on Veterans' well-being. Surveys reveal that 83% of participating Veterans felt less lonely, 77% reported increased overall well-being, and 86% felt that the VA genuinely cared about their well-being. The program also positively affected the volunteers, with 82% reporting an increase in their own overall well-being. With over 700 volunteers making more than 13,000 calls in 2021, the CCC has been featured in various VA publications and recognized by notable organizations, including The Beryl Institute and the American Red Cross.

Murphy's work with the CCC exemplifies her dedication to improving Veteran services through innovative, digital means. Her commitment to expanding the program nationwide highlights her ongoing dedication to addressing loneliness and enhancing the quality of life for Veterans.
